Category Archives: The Newsletter

This is the new venue where members and potential members of the Ipswich Outdoor Group can read about recent events, share news that is relevant to group interests but not appropriate for group emails, write about group initiatives – anything from charity fund-raising to activism aimed at keeping our footpaths open – present opinion editorials on issues close to their hearts, post classified ads, cartoons, pictures or anything else that occurs. Unlike the old Newsletter, it will be updated as and when new material comes to hand and, as this is a work in progress, it will be formatted as we go along and get an idea of what is required. Feel free to offer suggestions if any occur to you.

For the moment, content is divided into three categories: reports of past doings; announcements about upcoming events or issues of note, whether IOG instigated or particularly related to IOG interests; and classifieds, where you can advertise items for sale, for rent, or wanted. Follow the links to the right to filter.

Please send all contributions to Marie-Louise Karttunen for prompt posting.

October Film Night

The October film night is tomorrow – Friday 24th October.

This month’s film is  “What we did on our holiday” starring Rosamund Pike, David Tennant and Billy Connolly: “A couple and their three children travel to Scotland for their granddad’s birthday celebration. When the children have to make a big decision without adult supervision, they shock not only the local community but also the world media. A light and frothy comedy to brighten the dark nights.”

The film is scheduled to start at 8.15pm, so meet in the foyer of the Ipswich Film Theatre in the Corn Exchange at around 7.55pm.  You can book online on the IFT website or buy tickets on the night.

See the programme for more details and to contact Angela Bell (the film night organiser).

End of Cycling Season

The evenings are drawing in, the leaves are starting to change colour and the ‘easy’ and ‘out-of-order’ Monday evening cycle rides have now finished for this season. Look out for news about them restarting next year.

The Wednesday evening cycle rides will continue until October 22nd (just two more weeks!), starting at the earlier time of 6.30pm. Contact Dave Pinckard (the event organiser) for details.

October Social Meeting

Monday 13th October is the date for the next social meeting. It’ll start at 8.00pm in the upstairs lounge of The Thomas Wolsey pub. See the monthly social meeting page for more details and a map.

The new programme for October, November and December should be available by then so there’ll be lots of new events to discuss. It’s a good time to ask any questions about future events or the IOG in general and there’ll be plenty of time for socialising too!

Hope to see you there!

August Social Meeting

The August social meeting is tomorrow – Monday 11th August.

Lots of events on the programme for Matthew to talk through and he’ll be showing a video of the recent indoor skydiving event in Milton Keynes. There’ll be plenty of time for socialising too.

Potential members are always welcome at the social meeting and it’s a great way to find out about the IOG and what we do.

As usual, the meeting will start at 8.00pm in the upstairs lounge of The Thomas Wolsey pub. See the monthly social meeting page for more details and a map.

July Film Night

The July film night is tonight – Friday 25th July.

This month’s film is ‘Boyhood’: “Shot over 12 years, ‘Boyhood’ is a coming of age drama unlike any other as it follows a boy growing up from child to adulthood. An astonishing achievement, it resists the impulse to impose artificial drama, just letting life unfold before our eyes. The result is sophisticated and beautiful; a film that will pay emotional dividends for a long, long time.”

The film is scheduled to start at 7.30pm, so meet in the foyer of the Ipswich Film Theatre in the Corn Exchange at around 7.10pm.  You can book online on the IFT website or buy tickets on the night.

See the programme for more details and to contact Angela Bell (the film night organiser).

July Social Meeting

The July social meeting will take place tomorrow – Monday 14th July. It’ll start at 8.00pm in the upstairs lounge of The Thomas Wolsey pub. See the monthly social meeting page for more details and a map.

Matthew’s away, so Tamara will be in charge of proceedings this month and she’ll be talking through the programme of future events. There’ll be plenty of time for socialising too.

Potential members are very welcome to come along. If you’ve got any questions about the IOG or the activities, it’s a great time to ask them.

Hope to see you there!

‘Easy’ Cycle Rides – Change of Dates

From now until 1st September, the regular easy Monday evening cycle rides will take place on the first and third Monday evenings of each month.

These rides are suitable for less experienced cyclists and the pace will be moderate. The distance will be 12 -15 miles in about 90 minutes. There’s an opportunity to socialise after the event.

See the programme for dates, more details and to contact Robin Richardson (the organiser).

June Film Night

The June film night will be this Friday – 27th June.

The film this month will be the period drama ‘Belle’, the story of Dido, the mixed-race daughter of an 18th century naval officer, who was raised in England by her aristocratic great uncle. A rich and complex tale that explores the plight of an illegitimate young black woman, whose entire existence is a contradiction in terms.  The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson.

The film is scheduled to start at 6pm, so meet in the foyer of the Ipswich Film Theatre in the Corn Exchange at around 5.40pm.  You can book online on the IFT website or buy tickets on the night.

See the programme for more details and to contact Angela Bell (the film night organiser).

Successful New Members Night

Thank you to everyone who came to the new members event last night and made it such a big success. It was great to meet so many prospective members.

The (rather too warm) upstairs lounge of the Thomas Wolsey pub was packed with 23 new people and some current members, both relatively recent and old hands.

There was a slideshow of some of our previous adventures and the forthcoming IOG events were discussed enthusiastically. There was plenty of time to ask questions and for friendly chat. People were welcome to join the group on the night if they chose to and many did.

Thanks to everyone involved in the event preparations and those who gave talks about our past and future events.

We look forward to welcoming some of the new people on IOG events in the near future.
