This event proved a popular one, with 17 of us meeting at the local village hall. Luckily, permission was given to park there since sufficient parking is difficult to find in this rural part of Essex. We walked around 10 miles through Layer Breton, Layer Marney and through the outskirts of Tiptree. The building in the photograph is Layer Marney Tower, a magnificent Tudor Palace which has been owned by 11 families in the course of its 500 year history – although unfortunately it was never finished. Some of us went on to the Hare and Hounds Pub afterwards where there was lots of merriment and beer and other chilled refreshments to be enjoyed in their spacious pub garden.
