Action Outdoors is a local independent retailer specialising in travel, trekking, climbing and rambling gear. The shop stocks a wide range of gear for climbing, mountaineering, walking, camping, etc. Owner Dave Tonks is a regular walker, who likes to get away to warmer climates for trekking trips when time permits. He is also a well-known local climber and an active member of the Ipswich Mountaineering Club. Whilst local department store Coes is not a dedicated hiking shop, it does sell hiking boots and clothing and has gained a significant reputation of late for its revamped running department, having taken on many of the experienced staff members after the popular Sweatshop store based in the town’s David Lloyd Club closed. Coes does not buy Special Make Up – products that have reduced specifications to offer a permanent sale price. All products are full spec, so members should find great products at a keen price point, with staff that are fully trained to fit footwear and give advice. Whilst not covered by the discount, Coes also has two sales a year on outdoor clothing and a ski department in the winter for any members into snow sports.
