Day 6: Grasmere Butharlyp Howe YH to Helvellyn YH, 10 miles

We left Grasmere and took the path up the side of Little Tongue Gill.

We crossed the bridge and continued up Great Tongue to reach Grisdale Hause.

The route took us around Grisedale Tarn and then up the zig-zag path to Dollywaggon Pike.

It became progressively colder as we gained height. Another layer was required at the summit.

At the top the views opened out towards Patterdale and Ullswater.

We followed the path over the summits of High Crag and Nethermost Pike. We found a little shelter to protect us from the wind, which provided a perfect lunch spot before we reached Helvellyn. A friendly raven shared Mel’s sandwich.

A few people were approaching Helvellyn from Striding Edge but that wasn’t our route today. We continued from Helvellyn along the ridge over Whiteside to Raise…

…then headed down into the Glenridding valley to the hostel.
