Day 5: Borrowdale YH to Grasmere Butharlyp Howe YH, 13 miles

It’s amazing how weather conditions can change so dramatically from one day to the next. The morning was bright, calm and crispy with a slight frost.

The route took us up onto the ridge. There were amazing views back along Borrowdale to Castle Crag, Derwent Water and Skiddaw in the distance. We were heading in the opposite direction towards Glaramara.

On the way up, we met some inquisitive locals…

Further up the ridge, I bumped into Tim, a childhood friend I hadn’t seen for about twenty five years. He joined us for the morning walk all the way along the ridge to Allen Crags.

There were amazing views in all directions. In the distance, we could see Grasmoor, which we climbed on the first day of the trip.

There was a short scramble up to the summit of Glaramara. As we were on the north side, the frost remained so the rocks were slippery.

We had our lunch on Allen Crags with fantastic views towards Great Gable. We had walked along its base the day before and seen very little of it.

We parted company with Tim here to head eastwards towards Angle Tarn and the Langdale Pikes.

The route kept us on high ground from Angle Tarn to cross the Stake Pass onto Martcrag Moor and up to Thunacar Knott.

Sergeant Man was our last peak of the day, followed by a long descent down past Easedale Tarn to Grasmere. It was dark by the time we arrived at the hostel.
