Day 4: Wasdale Hall YH to Borrowdale YH, 13.5 miles

It was another breezy day, and another day where the second half of the planned route had to be modified to suit the conditions.

It was a steep climb up the side of Greathall Gill…

…then a more gentle incline up onto Whin Rigg. There were views across to the sea and Sellafield power station.

The steep gullies down onto the scree slopes provided us with a view of Wasdale Hall hostel.

The summit of Illgill head was so windy that we struggled to stand upright at the summit.

The cloud had lifted slightly by the time we reached the head of Wast Water; however, Lingmell was still not visible and, with a deteriorating forecast, we decided to head to Wasdale head for a quick drink and then take the valley route to Sty Head.

Pete was struggling with a muscle strain and decided to opt out of the second half of the day in the hope that a rest would mean he could join the walk tomorrow in a better condition.

The rest of us took Moses’ Trod up alongside Lingmell Beck to Styhead.

The cloud was beginning to descend as we approached the top and the wind was really strong. After a brief pause at Styhead Tarn, we started to feel cold. So we headed onwards and downwards by Styhead Gill to Seathwaite.

The light was beginning to fade as we reached Seatoller but it was just a short walk from there to the hostel.
