On Sunday, our group joined Glen and Jim on their fifth joint Stride and Guide event, this time in Bury St Edmunds.
Glen led a walk of 5 miles in the lush and peaceful surroundings of Bury, so unlike the town centre later in the day which was heaving with visitors to the Food and Drink Festival.
At the beginning of Glen’s walk, Jim showed us the Abbot’s Bridge which carried the abbey’s precinct wall over the River Lark.
We then had lunch in the attractive Abbey Gardens before Jim took us on a fascinating tour around the ruins and town.
We viewed the statue of St Edmund.
Some of us also cast a quick glance inside the Nutshell Pub, which is believed to be the smallest pub in England. It contains the gruesome relict of a dead cat hanging from the ceiling – it was put up there a long time ago to protect against evil spirits. Not much is known about the dead rat though!
Thank you to Jim and Glen for a great day.
