Sudbury and Bulmer Walk – Sunday 27th June 2021

We are back and operating official IOG walks again – see the programme for upcoming events!

On a cloudy Sunday morning, IOG members met in Sudbury for an 11.5 mile walk through the Stour Valley. The inspiration for this walk came from the Suffolk Magazine, in an article titled “Discovering Sudbury and Bulmer’s connection to Thomas Gainsborough”.

Our lunch stop was at Belchamp Church, opposite Belchamp Hall. According to the article, Belchamp Hall starred in the TV Series Lovejoy. After lunch we headed through Bulmer and onto Bulmer Tye. The monument on the Village Green at Bulmer Tye has a depiction of Mr and Mrs Andrews, subjects of one of Thomas Gainsborough’s most famous paintings. We then headed up the road for a quick drink at The Fox Pub.

Heading back to Sudbury after our drink stop, the sun made a welcome appearance for our last few miles. Upon our return to Sudbury, a few of us stopped for another drink at The Gainsborough Pub before heading home. A fitting end to a day of walking inspired by the man.
